THIS MONTH'S FEAUTURE

Château Mouton Rothschild’s Languedoc Property

This month we would like to introduce you to a unique producer from the Languedoc region - Domaine de Baronarques - that rivals even the greatest Bordeaux châteaux. Since 1998, Baronarques has flourished in the hands of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her two sons, Philippe and Julien. Located in the Languedoc region of southern France, Baronarques’ 2003 vintage marked the estate’s first full year production under the appellation AOC Limoux. In order to qualify for this AOC status, a Limoux red must be a blend of Bordeaux and southern France grape varieties. The unique mix of required grapes, along with the region’s cool mountain climate and warmer Mediterranean influence, the new Languedoc wines are pleasantly surprising. Today, this up and coming region is becoming increasingly attractive for its potential to create elegant wines that are uniquely different from classic Bordeaux. Thanks to the quality of the terroir, the Limoux reds of Domaine de Baronarques are now worthy of their rank amongst the most famous châteaux of the Rothschild family, including the illustrious Château Mouton Rothschild, Opus One and Almaviva.

“Today, the Languedoc region is becoming increasingly attractive for its potential to create elegant wines that are uniquely different from classic Bordeaux."

DOMAINE DE BARON’ARQUES BLANC

A pure Chardonnay, this is Baronarques’ fine AOC Limoux white that has been produced since 2009. It is a fresh and balanced wine, with lots of minerality and fruit. With an ageing potential that can compete with those whites of the top appellations, Baronarques Blanc is super rich and perfect for any wine lover. Aged in oak barrels for 9 months.

LA CAPITELLE DU DOMAINE DE BARON’ARQUES

The name Capitelle is a tribute to the dry-stone huts that were built in the 19th century by the region’s winegrowers. This lovely second wine is a blend of Bordeaux varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Mediterranean varieties, like Syrah, Grenache and Malbec – the proportions depend on the vintage. With generous fruit and pleasant notes of spice, this is a complex red with rich flavors that demonstrate the flawlessly integrated oak - aged for up to six months. Produced since 2008, La Capitelle is available only in limited quantities.

DOMAINE DE BARON’ARQUES ROUGE

As the Grand Vin, this red is a multifaceted Merlot-dominated wine that reminds us of the great Bordeaux wines, with a brilliant richness, refined aromas and elegant flavors. The blend is completed with various Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also Mediterranean varieties like Syrah, Malbec and Grenache – the proportions depend on the vintage. Oak-matured for 12 months. This premium wine can be enjoyed young, revealing lovely fruit, but it can also be cellared for quite a while thanks to the expertise of the Rothschild family.
