The Surprises of Bordeaux 2017

“I am utterly surprised by the overall freshness and elegance of this 2017 vintage.” – Davide Vaccarini, ARVI Head Sommelier

“I was very surprised by the relatively outstanding quality of the top wines I have tasted so far…most of the top wine estates of Bordeaux made some outstanding quality wines that will deliver beautiful drinking for years ahead.” – James Suckling

“The word I heard over and over again was ‘surprise’.”
– Elin McCoy, Bloomberg

From shocked and frightened, to amazed and impressed– the latest 2017 Bordeaux vintage is outspokenly – surprising. After a week of traveling, touring and most importantly, tasting Bordeaux’s latest releases, 2017 is definitely a surprising vintage. Surprising, in all senses of the word, from unexpected weather during the growing season to amazing selective harvests, the world’s most famed winemaking region has amazed us again.

“The quality of 2017 is much better than most people might expect.” – James Suckling

While the quality is not as consistent across the entire region as in 2016, Bordeaux’s greatest terroirs were able to produce strikingly fresh and elegant wines. The best reds this year are fresh, fruity and floral, they have this luscious acidity and delicate minerality that makes them, both approachable and age-worthy. This year most dry whites thrived as well, the greatest examples are vibrant and concentrated, well-balanced and refreshing. This vintage also produced excellent sweet wines, the finest are celebrated for their harmonious acidity and freshness. Sauternes sweet wines are undoubtedly the sexiest of the vintage.

“A level up from 2014, 2017 is not as exuberant as 2015 or as big as 2016, but we can’t always wait 30 years to enjoy a bottle of Bordeaux! I’m looking forward the approachability of these wines.” – Davide Vaccarini, ARVI Head Sommelier

As it is not necessarily Right Bank or Left Bank year, each appellation across the region produced stellar wines. Davide notes, “Each area has its highlights, some more blessed than others.” There are a few appellations that have excelled nearly homogenously, like Pomerol and Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank, especially those producers with vineyards at higher elevations; as well as appellations in the northern Médoc – Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac and Saint-Julien – on the Left Bank, whose vicinity to the estuary encouraged a favorable growing season and harvest.

“As always, the best terroirs made the best wines a fact that really showed in 2017.” – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast

It’s essential to remember that terroir this vintage is key. Davide explains, “Great terroir means the soils, the location, the microclimate and this year, the most important factor, the protection. This year, the region’s leading producers were those who met each of these criteria, specifically properties along the estuary or vineyards planted at high altitudes.” Many of Bordeaux’s top châteaux have reclaimed their status, like Left Bank’s Mouton Rothschild, Cos d’Estournel, Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and Margaux; and Right Bank’s Ausone, Vieux Château Certan and La Conseillante. Just south of the city of Bordeaux, the Pessac-Léognan appellation also had some magnificent performers, like Haut-Brion, Les Carmes Haut-Brion and Smith Haut Lafitte’s white.

“There have been some good surprises, such as the wines from the Right Bank’s Saint-Émilion appellation…The Médoc’s Pauillac and Saint-Julien appellation had successes in the world of Cabernet Sauvignon.” – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast

As many of you know, Bordeaux was hit by its worst frost in 25 years, making this a very variable vintage. It is important to break down this vintage not only by appellation, but also by château and maybe even, by vineyard. Davide Vaccarini, ARVI’s Head Sommelier and Brand Ambassador could not stress enough how important it is this year to rely guidance from a trustworthy source. After spending a week carefully tasting hundreds of En Primeur 2017 wines, in the winemaking capital of the world, Davide is more than happy to share his expertise with you.

“The outstanding quality of wines from ‘non-frosted’ vineyards is way better than everyone expected, given the challenges of the vintage.” – Elin McCoy, Bloomberg

With such a variable vintage, it is also imperative to secure the best wines before they are released onto the market. Purchasing En Primeur wines is not only the best way to guarantee the most sought after labels, but also reserve the quantities and unique large bottle formats that you desire. Purchasing Wine En Primeur guaranteed its origin – coming from a credible source, rest assured that each bottle has been stored and handled properly.

Like always, when it comes to En Primeur wines it is vital that you buy from a dependable and financially strong source. In the past years, some companies event wine bankrupt, therefore it is more than imperative to purchase from a proper, trustworthy merchant. One that has definite allotments and will deliver your wines.

Globally, the demand for En Primeur wines is high, and growing each year. We expect that the top wines will sell out quickly. As usual, we will inform our clients immediately upon release. But in order to avoid disappointment, we will need an equally face-paced reaction in return.

ARVI is here to help. We have one of the largest allocations of top-end Bordeaux 2017 wines and offer each and every producer without any tie-ups. If you have bought En Primeur wines from us before, we would like to give priority to those clients. Along with the standard and half-bottle sizes, as always we will give our clients the possibility to choose from larger formats as well - from Magnums to the extravagant 27-liter Primats – En Primeur is the time to dream big (and act faster). Our ambitious lineup of wine consultants will support you along the way. We will guide you through this year’s selection of En Primeur wines and assist you in making the best decision – fitting with your personal tastes and desires, of course.
